Contract Description:
In 2011, the Umatilla Fish Passage Operations project and Walla Walla Fish Passage Operations project were combined into one project to relieve administrative and contracting workloads. These projects were historically one project and were split at the request of BPA prior to being able to track activities in separate basins. With the Pisces management tool, work activities can be tracked by basin, therefore the need for the projects to be separated in no longer accurate. For interim history of the Walla Walla work activities (2000 - 2010) please refer to project 2000-033-00.

Umatilla Basin Background
In the 1980's, CTUIR and ODFW began implementing the Umatilla Fisheries Restoration Plan. An integral part of that effort was to address inadequate flow and migration conditions by constructing fish passage facilities, initiating a trap and haul program, and implementing the Umatilla Basin Project flow enhancement effort.

Project Goal: The long-term goal of the project is to increase the survival of both adult and juvenile migrants in the Umatilla Basin. Our approach is focused on three areas: 1) Monitoring, coordination and operation of trapping and passage facilities and river conditions; 2) Coordination and implementation of flow enhancement efforts; and 3) Provide transportation equipment to safely haul both adult and juvenile migrants when inadequate passage conditions exist.

Walla Walla Basin Background
In the late 1990's, CTUIR, ODFW and WDFW, along with many other agencies, began implementing fisheries restoration efforts in the Walla Walla Basin. An integral part of these efforts is to alleviate the inadequate fish passage conditions in the basin. Migration conditions are being addressed by removing diversion structures, constructing and/or modifying new and existing fish passage facilities, implementing minimum flow requirements, and providing trap and haul efforts when needed.

Project Goal:  The long-term goal of the project is to increase adult returns of spring Chinook, summer steelhead, and bull trout to the Walla Walla River annually by increasing survival of both adult and juvenile migrants. Our approach is focused on three areas: 1) Monitoring of flow and passage conditions; 2) Operation of trapping and fish passage facilities and transportation equipment; 3) Coordination of trapping and fish passage facilities, transportation, and flow enhancement efforts.
